Tawny Owls Y1
9/10/24
Hello Tawny Owls,
What a wonderful week we have had so far! I have been so impressed with how you have been identifying and using the split digraphs we have learnt in Phonics. Yesterday you all came up with lots of words using a-e, e-e, i-e and o-e!
In English we have been exploring adjectives and have used these to describe the character Oliver, from 'Oliver's Vegetables'. We have been able to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our sentences. Some of us have extended our sentences using 'and' and some were able to compare two characters.
In Maths, we have been looking at 'more than' 'greater than' 'less than' and 'fewer than'. We know to add one when finding more and subtract one when finding less. We have been able to show this using counters and tens frames and also find 1 more and 1 less on a number track.
In Science we have been naming parts of the plant. Check out our pictures where we have labelled the parts in our gallery!
You have all been given a plastic zipped folder to keep your reading diary and Monster Phonics book in. Please make sure they live in here and that the folder comes to school every day. With many rainy days we have had, particularly at drop off and pick up times, these folders will help protect the diaries and books when in your book bags. Thank you!
Mrs Pearce, Mrs Marah, Mrs Quartermain and Mrs Sansom
This week we have looked at the sounds: tch, ve and ai. We have used our segmenting and blending skills to read and write words using these sounds.
- Staffing - Mrs Marah will teach in Tawny Owls on Mondays and Mrs Pearce will teach Tuesdays-Fridays. Mrs Quartermain will support our learning on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Mrs Sansom will support our learning on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
- Each morning the children need to arrive at school between 8:45 am and 9:00 am. The blue gate will open at 8:45 am and close at 9:00 am.
- Home time is at 3:30 pm and the children will walk round to the gate at the top of the playground where they will be dismissed by a member of staff (Mrs Marah on Mondays, Mrs Pearce on Tuesdays-Fridays).
- The children will need to bring in a named water bottle each day.
- PE this term will take place on Thursday mornings (starting 12th September).
- Children will need to come into school wearing their PE kit. Please make sure that all of your children's items are NAMED so they can easily be recognised. We all know how unpredictable the British weather can be and the children will be doing PE both inside and outside, so send them in with layers and a waterproof. The children will need to be wearing the following items:
- A plain white PE top
- Navy or black bottoms. These could include:
- shorts
- joggers
- leggings
- A plain blue or black PE jumper
- A pair of trainers

- Reading Books - each Friday the children will bring home a Monster Phonics book, plus another book of their choice. The children will read the Monster Phonics book during our Guided Reading sessions before bringing it home to share with you. Please continue to sign the reading diaries each time you read at home. The reading diaries should be in school every day. The children have a zipped plastic wallet to keep their diary and reading books in. This must be with the books each day.
- Homework - the children will bring home one piece of homework in their green folders. This is a consolidation activity where the children can practise the learning that they have done in class. The children should be able to complete this activity quite confidently by themselves.
