Tawny Owls Y1

Hello Tawny Owls,

What a fabulous term we have had! You continue to amaze me with your perseverance and dedication to your learning :)

In Maths this term we have been adding and subtracting. We have been able to do this, using tens frames, number lines and independently writing number sentences. We have continued to subitise and have used this when exploring the different facts that make up a number. We found different ways to make 6, 8 and 10. We can also recall the odd and even numbers. We know that the odd numbers are 1 more than an even number.

In English, we continued to explore the story 'Lost in the Toy Museum: an adventure' by David Lucas. We came up with new settings that Bunting could visit to search for his friends. These included: space, under the sea, a jungle, a city and even McDonald's! We imagined what it would be like to visit these places. We came up with a bank of adjectives, using our 5 senses and then wrote descriptions of these new settings.

In History, we enjoyed learning about our parents favourite toys from their childhoods (thank you to those that sent in information and photos!). We loved that some of the toys were also our favourite toys, like dolls, bikes and construction toys! We also made comparisons between teddy bears from the past and present. We noticed that teddies now look a bit more snuggly than ones from the early 20th century!

Over the holidays, please continue to practise your high frequency words at home. It has been great to hear lots of the creative ways some of you have come up with to learn them! :)

I hope you all have a wonderful week and I look forward to seeing you all after half term.

Mrs Pearce

This term we have learnt the alternative pronunciations for the ie digraph (Yellow I and Green Froggy), The different graphemes for the or digraphy (or, ore, aw and au) and also the Tricky Witch air trigraph.

Next term we will learn some more Tricky Witch trigraphs.

  • Staffing - Miss Boyd will teach in Tawny Owls on Mondays and Mrs Pearce will teach Tuesdays-Fridays. Mrs Harris will support our learning on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and Mrs Fairfax will support our learning on Wednesdays.
  • Each morning the children need to arrive at school between 8:45 am and 9:00 am. The blue gate will open at 8:45 am and close at 9:00 am
  • Home time is at 3:30 pm and the children will walk round to the gate at the top of the playground where they will be dismissed by a member of staff (Miss Wells on Mondays, Mrs Pearce on Tuesdays-Fridays).
  • The children will need to bring in a named water bottle each day.
  • PE this term will be with Mr Pearce and take place on Thursday mornings.
    • Children will need to come into school wearing their PE kit. Please make sure that all of your children's items are NAMED so they can easily be recognised. We all know how unpredictable the British weather can be and the children will be doing PE both inside and outside, so send them in with layers and a waterproof. The children will need to be wearing the following items:
      • A plain white PE top
      • Navy or black bottoms. These could include:
        • shorts
        • joggers
        • leggings
      • A plain blue or black PE jumper
      • A pair of trainers
  • Reading Books - each week the children will bring home a Bag of Books, these will be a selection of  books, in line with the Phonics learning that week, plus a selection of Reading for Pleasure books. The children will be able to enjoy these books for the week (please read them more than once) and then will need to return the Bag of Books to school on a Friday, ready to swap for a new selection of books. Please continue to sign the reading diaries each time you read at home. During Guided Reading, the children will read a Monster Phonics book 3 times during the week, in school, focusing on: book talk and decoding, prosody and comprehension. The children will then bring this book home on a Friday to read at home.
